COLOUR WITCH'S ADVENT ~ RED ~ 6th December
Roots. Safety. The Things That Hold You.
Red is often described as the colour of passion, fire, danger; it’s all of that. But it is also the colour that says: you are safe here. You are held. You belong.
Red is your roots going down into the earth, your foundations. It's the people who've got your back. The places that feel like home. The possessions that aren't just things - they're memories, proof that you've lived and loved and built something solid.
At this time of year, when everything pulls us into commercialism, chaos, and other people's expectations - red reminds us to think about what actually keeps us steady.
The 3 Ps
Who are your people? Not just family, the ones you're supposed to care about, but those who make you feel safe and secure.
Where are your places? The locations that settle your nervous system, even if they're just a corner of your living room or a bench in the park.
What are your possessions? The objects that matter - not because they're expensive, but because they hold meaning. A mug. A photo. A stone you picked up on a walk five years ago.
Red asks us to notice what we've already got. To stop looking outside ourselves for safety when we've been building it all along, one small piece at a time.
A Red Altar Ritual:
Today, create a small altar. It doesn't need to be fancy or permanent - it can sit on a windowsill, a shelf, or the corner of your desk.
Find these things: do this with thought and meaning.
Something red - a candle, a piece of fabric, a ribbon, a stone, whatever you've got. Red is your anchor colour today.
A photograph of someone you love - or a few people. The ones who make you feel safe. If you don't have a photo, you can write their names on a piece of paper.
Something that represents a place that matters to you - a postcard, a ticket stub, a leaf, a drawing, a shell. Somewhere that feels like home, even if you're not there right now.
Something meaningful - an object that belongs just to you. Something small that holds memory or comfort. A ring, a coin, a charm, a button, a key.
Arrange them together. Light a candle, red if you've got one; a simple tea light will do if not. Sit with it for a moment and just notice: this is what holds me. This is what keeps me steady.
You don't have to do anything else. Just let it sit there for a day or two. Let it remind you that safety isn't something you have to find - you've been building it all along.
I’d love to see a photo of your Red Altar. (Mine is below!)

This is my altar:
People; a photo of me and my hubby, my safe person. A card from my trader family at The Gothic Gathering and a red fascinator made especially for this post at a networking group yesterday - a place I feel people really get me.
Place; Whitby - my spiritual home.
Possessions; my cauldron which has my mums favourite candle as a wax melt, a coin for abundance, a red jasper crystal, my red sage stick and a key I have buried in soil, so I always have a place of safety. A cinnamon stick for protection and bay leaf for manifestation plus my wish/affirmation for The Red House - that I keep in a jar with the key.
