New Moon for January

As part of my plans for 2026, I am creating The Colour Witch Wheel of the Year - based around the sabbats, moons and the emotional meanings behind my 12-step colour system.

Today is the New Moon, and January in my Colour Wheel is Black - a time to Pause, Surrender and Rest. So the New Moon in January is actually Black within Black. A double darkness, however, it’s not an emptiness, more of a refuge.

I’m struggling a little with the overwhelm of Black. Not sure about you, but the world out there feels a little too loud right now. Full of uncomfortable situations, anxiety-inducing news and current affairs that feel like a punch to the chest. And your blood feels like sticky black tar, hate and anger lodge in the body, a discomfort that you just cannot shake.

Some of us feel that more than others - but, as an empath, I’m betting you do too.

Let’s figure out how we can use the Moon cycle to help shift this. This moon isn’t wanting you to try fix things. It’s a gentle encouragement to come back to yourself. Back into your breath. Back into your body. Back into that quiet place inside you that still knows how to feel without being all-consumed and over-stimulated. And step away from the noise of world news and social media - your nervous system wasn’t built to carry the worries of the whole world, every minute of every day.

Black, in my colour system, isn’t emptiness - it’s the chaos of all of the colours, and sometimes this can feel as though you are drowning.

So your intention can be simple.

Pause - Just stop for a moment. Let your body know it doesn’t have to be on guard right now.

Surrender - Let go of the need to have an answer for everything. You don’t have to make sense of it all today.

Rest - Proper rest. Not just zoning out. Not collapsing in a heap on the couch. But the kind of deep rest that tells your body it is safe.

Black is ‘To Feel’  but make sure those feelings are yours… you are allowed to feel deeply without absorbing everything. Without deep rest, the nervous system never completely resets. Depression comes from a body that has forgotten how to stand down.

A mini-ritual for deep rest.

Light a candle - black if you have one. Close your eyes

Now imagine you are sinking gently to the bottom of a Black Ocean - as your feet touch the sandy seabed, simply surrender to the situation and relax.

You hear a beautiful Siren song and feel a warm embrace.

Then the sensation of ascending at speed.

You smell the brackishness of the sea and see a colourful mermaid tail splash and disappear.

Put a hand on your chest and remind your nervous system that you are here, now, and perfectly safe.

Open your eyes, take a deep, intentional breath and blow out the candle…

…and stop doomscrolling! Love Raychel

This resonated with me Raychel. I'm currently on sick leave and am worrying about the burden my absence is putting on others and am thinking I need to come up with a new plan but reading this (repeatedly if needed) will encourage me to quiet those thoughts.
